Pet Peeve!

Can I just say this. . . IF YOU DON’T KNOW THE DEFINITION OF A WORD OR HOW TO PROPERLY PRONOUNCE IT DO NOT, FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IT IS GOOD AND HOLY ON THIS EARTH, USE IT!!!!!!! I hear people all the time incorrectly using a term or even worse using words that don’t exist. My favorite. . . “irregardless”. Please, please quit using this word! It is NOT a word, because it in fact means “regardless of being regardless”. Huh?! Exactly!

Better yet, the word “moot” as in “the point is moot”. It is not “Mute”. Please consult dictionary.com for the proper pronunciation and use of this word. I hear this word mispronounced more than I hear it correctly pronounced and to me it’s like nails on a chalkboard. "Moot", as defined by Black’s Law Dictionary means “subject for argument; unsettled; undecided. A moot point is one not settled by judicial decisions” whereas “Mute” is defined as “Speechless, dumb, cannot or will not speak”. Some people should remain mute rather than use the word moot, but I digress.

Let’s keep this little saying in mind. . . “Tis better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.” – Abraham Lincoln. - AMEN

Agreed! Why is it that the people who speak incorrectly are the same ones who think they know it all?

As I tell my daughter all the time -

If you sound stupid and trashy by speaking incorrectly and butchering the English language, people will think you ARE stupid and trashy - no matter how much money you have or how educated you are.....look at half of the pro sports players out there! And some very high up policial figures for that matter.

And now I have to update MY BLOG with the correction.

Hang in there.=)

I completely agree with Deb's comments and unfortunately encounter these types of situations on a daily basis which is what initiated the conversation between Beth and I, along with the fact that we are constantly comparing the way words are pronouned in the South vs. North.

TGIF to you all!!!
