Veteran's Day

Today is a day of honor and remembrance of those men and women who have chosen to serve their country. It is a notable and admirable vocation that not all of us could do. Myself, for example, did not hear the call to serve my country, but I find it one of the most respectable jobs anyone could ever perform. While this profession sometimes asks the ultimate sacrifice from those who serve, it is also important to remember the other tasks the military does that might seem “small”, but are truly vital to the way of life we are accustomed to living in this great nation.

When you are reading your morning paper, listening to your favorite song, making outlandish statements on Facebook, or debating politics at your office water cooler, remember that it is not only the Constitution and the Bill of Rights that grant you these freedoms, but the military who continues to protect and ensure that we have these gifts. And really, they are gifts. There are so many countries where news is censored, where music is banned, and where people are imprisoned simply for voicing their opinions. While we have our share of obstacles to overcome to make this a perfect nation, at least we have the freedom to openly debate and criticize our government. Progress cannot happen if communications are hindered by fear. So again, thank a Vet, thank a service man/woman today because without these selfless people we couldn’t hope to continue to improve our country.
