thinking

Life is just a mystery isn’t it? One minute you are going along minding your own business and then BAM! Something else gets thrown at you. Take for instance my dear friend who less than a month ago lost her father and now is dealing with her mother having been in a terrible car accident. How much can one person take. . .how much can one family take?!?! I think what bothers me most is that these are truly good and decent people who have just been dealt one terrible hand from life to the next. Not to quote Kenny Rogers (heaven help me) but it makes ya want to “fold ‘em”, “walk away” and “run”. ICK!

And another thing that has been on my mind lately is “The Golden Rule”, which I try to live by and sometime fail to live by. (sigh) So I went to Wikipedia for some enlightenment and thought I’d share the same with all of you:

“The ethic of reciprocity or ‘The Golden Rule’ is a fundamental moral principle which simply means ‘treat others as you would like to be treated.’ It is arguably the most essential basis for the modern concept of human rights.”

And yet in light of the above I see “The Golden Rule” being trampled underfoot on a daily basis and it is disheartening at best.

“Christianity adopted the ethic of reciprocity from two edicts, found in Leviticus 19:18 (‘Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.’) and Leviticus 19:34 (‘But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God’). Crucially, Leviticus 19:34 universalizes the edict of Leviticus 19:18 from ‘one of your people’ to all humankind.”

I guess what I’m hoping is that before people take action they should consider if they want the same thing to happen to them. If the shoe was on the other foot, would you like to be treated this way or that way? Something to think about.

Dear Mrs. C.
I loved this post. I have Google set to send me email when it finds references to the Golden Rule, which is what led me to your article.

I am particularly interested in how people understand and interpret the Golden Rule in daily life and I found your comment very refreshing.

Thanks so much.
