When I was little my mother would read to me a book entitled "It's Halloween" by Jack Prelutsky. I have adored that book for as long as I can remember and we read it often, even when it wasn't Halloween. I still have a copy of the book to this day and I'm hoping to share it with my boys someday soon. In the meantime, here is an excerpt from the book. I HIGHLY recommend it for children 4-5 and up. The illustrations are wonderful as are the poems. My favorite by far is a poem entitled "The Goblin" and maybe it's the words, or maybe it was the inflection in my mother's voice, but that poem has stayed with me for years. I just love it. Again, were it not for Christmas, Halloween would be #1 on my list of holidays.
It's Halloween - by Jack Prelutsky
It's Halloween! It's Halloween!
The moon is full and bright
And we shall see what can't be seen
On any other night.
Skeletons and ghosts and ghouls,
Grinning goblins fighting duels,
Werewolves rising from their tombs,
Witches on their magic brooms.
In masks and gowns
We haunt the street
And knock on doors
For trick or treat.
Tonight we are
The king and queen,
For oh tonight
It's Halloween!
